The following was sent to me by a proud mother of one of the Mercy crew:
Her name is Lura (Gaelic) after my favorite aunt. I just now hung up the phone from her and wanted you to know. They are talking about possibly pulling into San Diego on June 5th. Word is they are going to leave there between the 28th & 30th of this month. Don't know anything else yet. She is doing well, but misses home, of course!!
Lura was 17 years old and had just completed her Junior year in high school when she joined the Navy through the Delayed Entry program. She was an honor roll student, and she earned 21 college credits during her years in high school. She played softball, volleyball, basketball, was a member of the drama club, as well as playing 3 instruments. We lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on a little island called Chincoteague (where the wild ponies are), until moving to the mainland during her Senior year. She has 3 brothers, and 1 sister (who is in college pursuing a degree in nursing).
With all the extremely painful things that have occured in our lives the last few years - my mother passing away from cancer 3 years ago, and her beloved great-grandfather passing away while she was in boot camp, she has kept a very level head, and took the steps necessary to get where she is, and we couldn't be more proud of her if we tried. She has NEVER given us any trouble, and has always been very respectful. We love her very much.
